Easy Rhetorical Devices

Thu 18 Feb  2020, 19:00 to 21:00 – Online Event
Note: this is a bonus event, additional to our regular Wed nights!

Workshop presented by Susan Hewitt
Vice President Membership
Tube Talk Toastmasters

This workshop is for you if you feel you want to add something extra to your speeches. You are ready to enrich your language tool-box in a supportive environment.

How does this happen? Well we all speak in patterns, and usually we are not conscious of these. By studying and understanding other possible patterns of speech or rhetorical devices as they are known, we can craft them into our speeches. This makes us able to persuade or affect an audience much more easily as our language will be more effective, memorable and enjoyable.

You are already familiar with some rhetorical devices such as repetition of words or phrases,  alliteration, the rule of three , rhetorical questions and metaphors; but there is so much more to be discovered and you will be amazed by what you achieve in this workshop.

The workshop is a balance of taught and practice sessions and is fully interactive. A variety of education methods are employed  including games, writing exercises,  reflection and  discussion.

Previous participants said:

‘a beast of a night with a sea of rhetorical devices’

‘it was so fun and interactive’

‘I could take up the role of Grammarian now for the first time’

‘The rhetorical devices workshop has given me the confidence to use

them in my speeches and also to look for them and make reference to

them in evaluations’

‘It was really well planned and structured’

‘I liked  Susan’s informal and entertaining style’

‘I feel much more confident about using these devices’

The International Speech contest goes up further levels culminating with the International Speech Contest hosted by Toastmasters International at the annual International Convention.
